The Edmonton Oilers are clearly a flawed team and general manager Craig Mactavish has the extremely difficult job to try and fix it and in short order. The collective group on the back-end was horrific, the size in the top six was embarrassing, the lack of depth on the bottom end was painfully obvious and the list goes on and on. Is it even possible for Mact to fill all the holes in one offseason???
I had the privilege of getting a free lunch at The Westin yesterday afternoon and the food was fantastic! I had the chicken and caesar salad. Oh ya… Craig MacTavish spoke to the crowd for a while as well and was very forthright answering every question sent his way. The season ticket holders asked good questions for the most part and Mact was very honest and didn’t beat around the bush. Here are a few tidbits.
The N.H.L. trade deadline is just 23 hours away and Oilers general manager Craig Mactavish is probably busy explaining why his pending UFA’s are of value and why they’re worth making a deal to get. Admittedly the Oilers assets are second tier guys but I can still see them being of use to a cup contender. The playoffs are a grind with teams playing every other day for two months. Extra bodies are a must and the Oilers have a few players who I feel could be of use to those cup contenders.
So www.nhl.com has Denis Grebeshkov listed on The Edmonton Oilers roster now so, it looks like their back-end is more than full with this apparent signing. With the addition of Grebeshkov, The Oilers now have ten defencemen signed:
The Edmonton Oilers wish list this off-season is a long one with NHL quality players needed throughout the line up. At a quick glance the needs look like this:
Hall Nuge Eberle
____ Gagner Yakupov
PRV ____ _____
Brown Lander ____
Obviously these holes can not be all be filled this off-season and Mact certainly has a ton of work to do.
