The Edmonton Oilers managed a 5-2 victory last might against the Vancouver Canucks but woke up this morning to find out centre Sam Gagner will be gone for the foreseeable future with a broken jaw. Taylor Hall took a nasty elbow to the face earlier in the game and Darnell Nurse was run from behind as well. Reminds me of the last few seasons doesn’t it? Continue reading »

The Edmonton Oilers played last night in Vancouver and cruised to a 4-1 victory.  The team looked pretty good on the whole and I really like the pressure and pace that the new look Oilers play with.  The Oilers play a faster paced game under Dallas Eakins and pressure the puck all over the ice.  Continue reading »

loading up for a trade

Is GM Craig Mactavish loading up for a trade? - This morning over breakfast I was reading the Edmonton Journal’s Cult of Hockey Blog. Bruce McCurdy posted an article Sunday night referencing the Oilers latest pickups on defense. Organizationally, the Oilers have had a number of moves on defense this off season. Gone are Ryan Whitney, Theo Peckham, Colton Teubert, Alex Plante, and Kyle Bigos. Additions include:  Anton Belov, Philip Larsen, Darnell Nurse, Lee Moffie, Ben Betker, and Brad Hunt. Is it possible that Mactavish is loading up for a trade? Continue reading »

Edmonton Oilers 2013 development camp

Briefly at the Edmonton Oilers 2013 development camp- The image above shows Rocky Thompson and prospect (#61) Jackson Houck on the ice this morning at the 2013 Edmonton Oilers development camp. If when he played Thompson was blessed with more skill, he may have been exactly the type of forward Craig Mactavish is currently looking for. However, Thompson (including junior) never had a season where he hit double digits for goals. He hit many things, but the net wasn’t one of them. It was actually a complete fluke I was even in attendance today; my wife and I were going to head to the West Edmonton Mall Waterpark with our daughter and then decided last minute to head out to the Millenium Place in Sherwood Park. It didn’t even occur to me until we arrived that the development camp was underway. I managed to watch for about 30 minutes after we got out of the pool. It never ceases to amaze me the minute difference between prospect and suspect and if I didn’t have a program, I would have had a tough time pointing out a first rounder from a late camp invite.  Continue reading »
